Frankenstein

Within Frankenstein the set plays an intrinsic role in defining the world for the performers to reside within and establishing the visual language of the performance. One of the key aesthetics for us was the Victorian era, with its ornate designs, connections to the macabre and post-industrial revolution relationships between man and machine. Victorian Era greenhouses were chosen to be the core visual inspiration for the set design. When researching Victorian era greenhouses, I found a visual connection between their structural elements and Gothic churches. This connection allows for the space to reflect the religious themes within the play and when combined with the translucent windows, it invokes the idea that the characters are always being judged by those around them, the audience and god.

The Finalized Set design consists of a raised 1m platform, lined with windows on the upstage edge consisting of a cyc material as a projection and lighting surface. The set also utilizes the theatre's thrust stage, on which there are 3 maneuverable blocks, a staircase and assorted furniture.
